Peggy and her team, now called Amy’s Admirers/Webber’s Warriors, joined the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk in honor of Peggy’s sister, Amy Kohlberg Quinlan, who died of cancer in 2003.
The team name was eventually expanded to include Neal Webber, a friend of Peggy’s husband’s friend who died of prostate cancer. The team has been participating for 15 years.
“We raise about $140,000 each year,” Peggy writes. “Our team has averaged 60 Walkers per year, and each year we have a different color shirt.” Peggy’s friend, Barbara Sadowsky, made Peggy a quilt with 15 years worth of T-shirts and Walk photos. “It was the most meaningful gift I ever received -memorializing our years walking.”
Cumulatively, the team has raised more than $2,000,000. Peggy works with her husband to host a pasta dinner for their team the night before the walk and provide a bus to and from the walk site.
The Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk is presented by Hyundai and considered to be the nation’s most successful single-day fundraising walk. This year’s walk is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 22. Funds raised from the walk will benefit all types of pediatric and adult patient care and cancer research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
“Peggy and her team’s enthusiasm, passion and energy exemplify the unique spirit of this event,” said Zack Blackburn, Director of the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk. “The team is a prime example of a community who has dedicated their time to conquering cancer and supporting high-level research at Dana-Farber.”
